Thank you, God
for the balance of day and night
for the comfort and warmth of our beds;
for unbroken nights in fresh sheets;
for changes in attitudes that refreshing sleep brings;
for your care and love continuing through the night.
Remind us, Lord, of those
sleeping in the streets - rejected,
tossing through hospital nights,
sitting alone by dying relations;
insomniace who dread these dark hours,
children frightened by drunken fights,
mothers helplessly watching ill or starving children;
those with fears magnified by the intensity of darkness,
the lonely, the sick, the disturbed,
the outcasts of society,
whom in our comfort we easily forget.
Use us, Lord, join our prayers with those of countless
others to spread your love and to ease the sufferings beyound our imaginings
for which we must share responsibility.
